Dear
Families,
Did you know that Polar bears are one species that is greatly impacted
from the warming world? Did you know that all of the polar bears at the
Assiniboine Park Zoo are rescued bears from the Hudson Bay area? These bears
were rescued by the zoo, as they could no longer live in the wild. Strathmillan
School will be raising money during this week to
support the rescue and continued care of polar bears at the Assiniboine Park
Zoo. Students at Strathmillan School will be
having a Polar Bear Celebration Week from February 13-17th, 2017.
The purpose of this is to bring awareness about climate change and how it is
affecting all life on Earth. We will be
ending our week on Friday with a polar bear walk around the community. Families
are welcome to join us.
There are many simple things you can do at home that
are good for the environment and good for polar bears. Your climate change
challenge is to complete FIVE actions at home and/or school to help combat
climate change. List your actions below and collect a Loonie from someone at
home for each action you take. Return the money you collect and your challenge
form to your teacher. Any donation would be helpful. Here are a few ideas to
get you started
-Walk instead of driving-Don’t use the drive thru
-Use reusable containers and have litterless lunch
-Use reusable bags
-Turn off your car and don’t idle
-Use water efficiently
-Turn off the lights
-Don’t use the iPad or technology
-Unplug your cell phone at
night
Sincerely,
Students of Room 38 and 41
